Pathways to the Archibald Art Prizes Planner

Seeing is believing.

Art prizes rarely exist in isolation. Looking across years of finalist and winner records reveals recurring pathways: artists recognised by prizes such as the Sulman, Mosman, Portia Geach, Lester and Paddington Art Prize often go on to become Archibald or Wynne finalists. Paddington is a particularly interesting pathway, with 26 artists later reaching the Archibald and 22 later appearing in the Wynne.

These connections don’t mean that one prize directly causes success in another. Instead, they show how artists build visibility, experience and recognition across Australia’s wider art-prize circuit. Specialist prizes also form distinctive routes of their own, connecting First Nations artists, women artists and emerging practitioners with later recognition in major national competitions.

Over the years i've done a lot of research into the key inputs and outputs of the two biggest art prizes in Australia - the Archibald and the Wynne. This continues the research, but looks at the inputs or pathways that other artists have collectively trodden.
